Do I need an EHCP?

Updated: Apr 22, 2021

My introduction to the SEN world journey or as I called it then my nightmare, began in 2000. My son was in nursery, and he wasn't speaking at almost 3 years old. One day out of the blue unaware that there was even a significant problem. One day out of the blue a lady from the Council called me and told me she was an Education Psychologist and she had been into the school to assess my son and was phoning to inform me that my son has Autism and she was referring him to the Paediatric services. I had no idea what she was talking about, what was Autism, why would they just invite someone in from the council to assess my child? I had to trust that the school are experts they must know what they are doing and what is in my son's best interest so I best go with the flow. I had no idea what was Autism, and had to go to the library to find out more as I had never heard of it, and the internet wasn't around then. I found very little in the library and though maybe I am alone in this maybe it is something rare, after all, all my friends were my age, they all had children and none of them had a child with Autism. What did it mean?

I had a wonderful Health Visitor (HV) at this time, who was not a conventional HV, she was one who had worked in a commercial background with a baby food company and then decided upon a career change so she was always full of ideas and knowledge, and she came to visit. It was the HV who explained a bit about what Autism was and left me a leaflet for the National Autistic Society Local Group of parents to get in touch.
